Emirates Shipping Association convened its Annual General Assembly on Thursday, 16th April 2026, at Almas Conference Centre, Jumeirah Lakes Towers — hosted by DMCC. With more than 120 members in attendance, the turnout reflected an industry that remains engaged through challenging times.

Patrick Ghata of DMCC addressed the assembly, reinforcing the pivotal role shipping plays in sustaining global trade and the importance of strengthening the maritime community as a collective. His remarks set an appropriate tone for the morning — one of shared purpose and institutional commitment.

Vice Chairman Salah Sharaf opened proceedings, addressing the current regional situation with clarity and purpose. He underscored the importance of collective resolve — that in periods of uncertainty, the maritime sector must draw on its shared interests and work in concert to safeguard stability, continuity of trade, and the longer-term interests of the industry.

We are all aware of the current situation in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. What remains within our control is how we respond — with coordination, responsibility, and a continued focus on the smooth flow of trade.

— Salah Sharaf, Vice Chairman, Emirates Shipping Association

Secretary General Anders Østergaard followed with a structured review of the Association’s activities and strategic direction for 2025 and 2026. Treasurer Capt. Rishi Nyati then presented the financial overview for the same period, providing members with a clear account of the Association’s position and resource allocation. The Department of Community Development was also represented at the assembly, reflecting the broader institutional interest in the sector’s continued growth and governance.

Board Member Dr Waddah Ghanem introduced the Maritime Leadership Programme 2026, which will take place in Greece — an investment in developing the next generation of maritime leaders across the region.

The assembly closed with an extended networking session and no shortage of conversation. The Association extends its thanks to HFW for their efforts in facilitating the event, and to DMCC for their hospitality in bringing the community together.

In a period of heightened pressure on the sector, the depth of engagement across the morning spoke for itself. Maritime has always been an industry that meets uncertainty with continuity — and the strength of attendance this year reflected exactly that.
